Car accident in Serbia: damage assessment and vehicle valuation

A claim with an international element is rarely a technically difficult case. Usually it is a case where nobody knows who to call. The driver is in one country, the vehicle is registered in a second, the insurer sits in a third, and the deadlines are running. We take over the part that has to be done by an expert and on the ground: establishing the damage, the condition and the value of the vehicle, in a report that can also be used outside Serbia.

If you are reading this back home after a trip to Serbia, or your vehicle is still standing there, most of what follows can be started by email today. Write to us in English, tell us where the vehicle is, and we will say straight away what can be done remotely and what needs an inspection on site.

Four situations in which we help

1. Serbian vehicle, damage abroad

The vehicle was damaged abroad and brought back to Serbia, or it stayed there until the case is settled. We prepare the damage report and establish the value of the vehicle before the damage, with photo documentation and a documented methodology. If the vehicle has already been repaired, we prepare the report afterwards on the basis of documents, invoices and photographs, stating clearly what was established by inspection and what was taken from the documents.

2. Damage in Serbia, a foreign vehicle was involved

The injured party is in Serbia and the other side drives a vehicle with foreign plates. We establish the extent and the amount of the damage and, where needed, check whether the damage matches the course of events as described. That is often decisive, because in cases with an international element the course of events itself is disputed more often.

3. A foreign visitor who had an accident in Serbia

Drivers in transit, trucks on the corridor, tourists, employees of foreign companies working in Serbia. Most of them do not know the local procedure and cannot afford to wait. We come to the vehicle, assess the damage and the condition and prepare the report. If the vehicle is roadworthy, we can also handle the case remotely so that nobody is left standing.

4. Foreign driver with a Serbian registered vehicle abroad

Usually rental and leasing vehicles or company cars of local firms driven by foreign employees. Here, alongside the damage, the value of the vehicle before the event is almost always established as well, because everything that follows depends on it.

What we do and what we do not do

This should be clear before you call us.

We do: damage reports, vehicle valuations, expert reports on the amount of material damage, plausibility checks of the damage and accident reconstruction, condition reports for banks and leasing companies, and technical advice on the next steps.

We do not: we do not handle the claim settlement and we do not represent you against the insurer. We are not a claims handling agency. If you want to pursue the claim yourself, you get the orientation and the report from us. If you want representation, we refer you to a law firm or send you directly to the insurer.

We draw that line deliberately. We work with insurers and banks as well as with law firms, and the report carries weight precisely because we do not take sides in any dispute.

Video assessment, when an inspection is not possible or not fast enough

We use the video assessment in two situations. The first is about time: the client needs the report quickly and cannot wait for an inspection appointment. The second is about place: the vehicle is far away or in another country, so travelling to it is not possible or not economically justifiable. In both cases we handle the file without travelling, and with clients from abroad we communicate in English.

On vehicles in transit and on commercial vehicles, the most expensive part of the loss is often not the damage itself but the downtime. The driver receives a link at the scene, allows access to the camera and the microphone, and our expert guides him live through the recording of the damage. No app has to be installed.

For clearly visible damage that is usually enough to open the file the same day. If damage to the load bearing structure is suspected, if a total loss is possible, or if the course of the accident is disputed, we require a physical inspection and we say so straight away.

Why the report holds up outside Serbia as well

  • The report contains a documented methodology, photo documentation and comparable market data, not just an amount.
  • The lead expert is certified to EN ISO/IEC 17024 by EWIVS Certification, a certification body accredited with NIILA Accreditation Ireland.
  • For the forensic analysis of vehicle data we use Bosch CDR equipment with certification from TrDARTS Netherlands, and for reconstruction the simulation programs PC Crash, VirtualCrash and Analyzer Pro.
  • We prepare reports in two languages, Serbian and English, and in German if that is needed.

For insurers and correspondents

If you need an expert on the ground in Serbia, we work on instruction: travel, inspection, photo documentation, and the report in the agreed format and within the agreed deadlines. We cover the whole of Vojvodina and the wider Belgrade area, as well as Valjevo, Aranđelovac, Topola, Velika Plana, Smederevo, Požarevac and Niš with the surrounding region, with an employed expert in Novi Sad and a colleague in Niš. We are open to cooperation with foreign insurers and correspondent networks.

For law firms

We take over the technical part of the case and stop there. We do not take on clients, we do not run proceedings and we do not pursue claims in your name. We prepare the report, an opinion on a report already submitted by the other side, or a plausibility check of the damage where the course of events is disputed.

What to send us to start with

  1. Where the vehicle is and whether it is roadworthy
  2. Photographs of the damage and of the wider accident scene, if you have them
  3. Details of the vehicle and its registration, and which country is involved
  4. The documents you have: police report, European Accident Statement, claim notification, any report already prepared
  5. What you need: a damage report, a vehicle value, or an opinion on an existing report

You receive the price before the work starts, and it does not change afterwards, unless the scope changes with your prior agreement.

Frequently asked questions

As a rule we do not travel outside Serbia. The exceptions are an instruction from a competent authority and cases involving a larger number of vehicles, for example the buy back of a fleet, where the journey is economically justifiable. Damage that occurred abroad is usually handled on the basis of photographs and documents sent to us, supported by a video assessment with which both the damage and the condition of the vehicle can be established. If the vehicle is in Serbia, we come to it on site in the areas we cover.

The methodology applied, facts supported by evidence and photo documentation, and the professional qualification of the person who prepared it. No expert can guarantee in advance that a particular insurer will accept a report, but an expert can guarantee that it is technically sound and open to review. We prepare reports in two languages, Serbian and English, and in German if that is needed.

No. We do not handle claim settlement and we do not represent clients against insurers. We prepare the expert report and give you orientation on the next steps. If you want representation, we refer you to a law firm or send you directly to the insurer.

Then we work with a video assessment. The driver receives a link, allows access to the camera and the microphone, and our expert guides him live through the recording of the damage. For clearly visible damage that is usually enough to open the file the same day, without the vehicle standing still.

We prepare the report in two languages, Serbian and English, and in German as a second language if that is needed. With clients from abroad we communicate in English throughout the whole case, from the first report to the handover of the finished document.

That depends on where the vehicle is, the urgency, the complexity of the case, the type of vehicle and the type of report you need. If you describe the case to us, you receive the price before the work starts, and it does not change afterwards unless the scope changes with your prior agreement.
